Our Community

How do I join Kitchen Democracy?
You are counted as a Kitchen Democracy user as soon as you state your position or request email update services, and give us your contact information.
Are there any membership fees?
No. We promote participatory democracy. Participating in civic discourse must be, and is, free.
What about people who don't use a computer?
People can submit a statement along with their contact information via regular mail at:
Kitchen Democracy
2930 Domingo Ave. #110
Berkeley CA 94705

Still, it is easier for computer users to participate - and we wish it were otherwise.

Our goal is to encourage greater participation in democracy, both by computer users and non-users. In our experience, the vast majority of both groups does not participate at the local level on most issues. It may be that the reasons for non-participation are similar in both groups. If so, the lessons we learn as we help computer users participate will enable us to facilitate participation from non-computer users as well.

Encouraging participation in democracy is a big complex project. Your suggestions are always welcome!

How do you know that users are who they say they are?
Ultimately, we don't. Anyone can start an email account and claim to live at a specific address.
However, we employ various methods, both technological and old fashioned legwork, which can minimize the risk of systematic fraud.
Does Kitchen Democracy advocate positions?
No. We maintain strict neutrality on each issue. We are non-partisan and do not take sides on any issue. Our only agenda is promoting participatory democracy.
Why 'Kitchen'?
We view your thoughtful statements as healthy food that nurtures democracy.
